Program and Tea Saturday, March 11, 1:00 p.m.
Phyllis Chapman, of Vintage Visitors, will join us for tea, after which she will present her new program about Women in the Civil War. Phyllis does extensive research on all her historical figures. She also researches and creates the finely tailored costumes.
While Civil War generals, armies, and battles have been the subject of books, articles, movies and documentaries, the contributions of women in the conflict have been less noted. Women were no less involved than men, often in strikingly similar roles. The first woman to lead a military mission for the US Army did so in 1863, and she was a woman of color. The only female Medal of Honor recipient was a Civil War surgeon who struggled for recognition both during and after the War. Women served in ways great and small, as nurses, spies, writers, in industry and on the battlefield. For some, their war activities propelled them toward a new, independent mindset and more active future roles in society.
Cost is $20. Please make your reservation by March 4.
Send your check, payable to AAUW Bennington Branch, to Althea Church, 24 Tory Lane, Arlington VT 05250.
