Read-Around: Ukrainian Fairy Tales, Folk Tales and Fables on April 6 at 1:00 pm –Bit.ly/AAUWBennRead

Ukraine has been much in our minds this spring. This month’s Read-Around will give us a chance to slip into the history, culture and imagination of Ukrainians through reading or listening to others read several Ukrainian fairy tales, believed to be the first translation from Cossack sources to English.

The Ukrainian word for “fairy tale” is казка (kazka). Across their history, Ukranians were in contact with nearly the entire Slavic world and although their folk kazkas are influenced by pan-Slavism, theyreflect Ukraine’s distinctive culture. The most popular animals in Ukrainian fairy tales are those most well-known in Ukraine:  the fox, the wolf, the dog, the bear, the cat, the sparrow and the hare.

As always, absolutely no preparation is needed beforehand and first-timers are welcome! Just sign onto Zoom at 1:00 pm. Branch member Ruth Giordano, our facilitator, will guide us through the reading. Don’t want to be a reader? Feel free to join the  meeting as a listener and take part in the conversation afterwards.
