AAUW Credited with Sparking Idea for Antique Clothing Exhibit at Park-McCullough House
Last week, Jennifer Kern and Dawn Rodrigues decided to stop in to see the Special Exhibition–which lasts until October 31. We learned that as a result of our suffrage event–“From Corsets to Combinations”–Park-McCullough Director, Chris Oldham and antique fashion expert Linda Meyer and her colleague Greg LeFave had been collaborating on Elegance–a new exhibit. Meyer and LeFave helped Oldham sort through boxes of carefully packed clothing–dresses and gowns for women and children as well as men’s dress suits and even one server’s uniform. Oldham said that he had no idea what was in many of the boxes, nor did he realize that the items of clothing were in almost pristine condition due to their having been packed in acid-free paper. When the treasure trove of antique apparel emerged, Oldham asked for Meyer and LeFave’s assistance in choreographing a special exhibition. AAUW visitors will be delighted to see the many mannequins (some were on display during the suffrage event) that LeFave has collected over the years and made available to Park McCullough House for the exhibit. If you’ve not yet seen it, don’t miss it! The exhibition runs until Oct. 31.
Susan B. Anthony Project–Possible Outing for October
Originally scheduled for June, The Susan B. Anthony Project has been re-scheduled for Oct. 16-18. We won’t be organizing a group visit to the play as we had originally intended, but we do encourage members to attend on their own or with friends.
Here’s the background: On February 8-9, 1894, Susan B. Anthony hosted a Woman’s Suffrage Convention at Hubbard Hall in Cambridge, NY. Last year, Hubbard Hall received a grant for $30K to create a new play based on this history with local students and adults writing on issues of women’s rights, the Woman’s Suffrage Movement and our local ties to this history. This new theatrical piece with music has been produced at Hubbard Hall and will be performed October 16 through the 18th, 2020.
The play is about Susan B. Anthony, her convention at Hubbard Hall in 1894, her deep friendship with Mary Hubbard, and issues of Women’s Rights in the U.S. today. Theater has been used to teach students local history tied to the Woman’s Suffrage Movement and to empower all of us to continue the work in pursuit of Equality for All.
Tickets are $25.00 each and are available at the the Hubbard Hall website.
