Lucille (“Lou”) Leamon, a former leader of our AAUW branch, died on October 16, 2020 from pancreatic cancer. Lou had been living in a retirement home in East Springfield, Massachusetts, for several years to be closer to the home of her daughter Christine. Long-time branch members will remember her as a very capable branch president, program chair, treasurer, and co-president with Lea Newman. Lou was a teacher in the Williamstown School system and seemed to know half of the families in Williamstown because she had taught their second graders. She was also an enthusiastic opera lover and attended opera classes and performances with Lea Newman, Gudrun Hutchins, and the late Dorothy Polatsek for more than 25 years.
A founding board member of the Tutorial Center nearly 50 years ago, Lou was an active board member until her death, participating in board meetings by conference call after she no longer lived in Bennington. After her retirement from teaching, she served as a docent or volunteer at the Bennington Library, the Bennington Museum, and the Robert Frost Stone House Museum.
Memorial contributions in honor of Lou may be mailed to the Tutorial Center, 208 Pleasant Street, Bennington or to the Second Congregational Church, 115 Hillside Ave., Bennington.
