Job Description of editor and Co-editor (if there is one) and Content for Specific Monthly Issues
1. Send members a newsletter once a month from August through June. At the present time the Branch Newsletter is typically sent during the last week of the month and covers programs for the coming month. Members receive an email with a link to the current issue, which is stored on the AAUW Benne website.
2. Working collaboratively with the Co-editor of the newsletter, collect content, assemble the newsletter, draft columns as needed, and email the newsletter to members in a timely manner. Note: It is very important that there are two newsletter Co-editors, not only to make the job more manageable, but also to cover for each other when one is traveling or otherwise occupied. It is also helpful if the newsletter Co-editors are active members who participate in many of the meetings and events that are described in the newsletter.
3. Send out a “call for copy” to program chairs and other board members each month, requesting information about upcoming programs, calendar items, and other content, and setting a deadline for material to be included in the next issue. Specific board members who are included in the email include the Branch President (who submits a President’s column for most newsletter issues), the Program Committee, the First Mondays program contact, the Hospitality Chair, the Membership Co-chairs, the Book Group Coordinator, and the Scribble Sisters contact person. Members should write the copy for their stories so that the editors can focus on assembling and editing the newsletter.
4. With the year-long flow of meetings in mind, devote space in specific newsletter issues for information related to regular events, including the September issue, which requires information about the Oldcastle Play for our fundraiser and information about the potluck dinner and the speaker at that event; the December issue, which requires information about the Holiday party, name, and the June issue, which includes information about the picnic. The February and Septembers issues typically feature an article about the recipients of scholarships awarded in January and June.
