Please join us this month for a virtual walk through both African American Harlem and Spanish Harlem. The walk will be led by Leigh Hallingby, a long-time feminist and good friend of Judy Murphy’s.
We will stop at the places where accomplished women, ranging from iconic to not so familiar, are honored. Stops include named buildings, murals and mosaics, statues, plaques on the sidewalk, and commemorative street corners. And the women range from A’Lelia Walker to Nicholasa Mohr to Zora Neale Hurston.
The tour also offers a great look at Harlem, recently referred to by the NY Times as “New York’s most storied neighborhood.” The virtual tour is about 50 minutes of slides with live commentary.
Time for comments from the audience and Q&A will follow. Leigh is a licensed New York City tour guide who specializes in Harlem, Morningside Heights, and the Upper West Side. She is passionate about exploring all five NYC boroughs and beyond on foot, mostly through organized walking tours. Leigh is retired from a 36-year career as a non-profit librarian. She loves doing research about the neighborhoods in which she gives tours and sharing the information about them with attendees. Leigh is a feminist, collector, genealogist, and lover of arts, culture, and travel. She lives on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
